Students in the EAST program identified a need to update the TLA building’s fire escape plan because the existing plan was outdated and did not accurately reflect the current building layout. The original plan was missing newly constructed rooms, contained incorrect room numbers, and did not accurately represent some wall structures.
Students worked collaboratively to create an updated floor plan and partnered with the School Resource Officer (SRO) throughout the process to ensure the plan met safety expectations and received the necessary approvals. Students completed two drafts, incorporating feedback and making revisions until the SRO approved the final version. This project provided students with an authentic opportunity to apply problem-solving, communication, attention to detail, collaboration, and revision skills to address a real need within their school.
