Brinkley High School and the district rely on many electronic and technology-based devices that can stop working or require technical support. The Junior IT project was created to train EAST students to identify technology problems, research possible solutions, troubleshoot equipment, and make repairs when possible rather than immediately replacing the equipment.
The students have already worked on several real technology problems. They repaired the school’s Carbon 3D printer after an extruder and guide tube became clogged. They also configured the host files on EAST classroom computers to block selected websites. Most recently, they diagnosed and repaired a popcorn maker that was no longer working.
The project involves 3D printer technology, computer systems, host-file configuration, electrical and electronic equipment, troubleshooting tools, and digital research.
How the Project Fills the EAST CART?
Community: The students provide useful technology support to their school and district.
Action: They work directly on real equipment and apply what they have learned to solve problems.
Research: Before attempting a repair, students research the device, identify possible causes, and investigate potential solutions.
Technology: Students work with computers, software configurations, 3D printing technology, and electrical/electronic equipment.
What Makes This Project Unique?
The Junior IT project gives students the opportunity to learn through real problems rather than only completing simulated classroom activities. Each repair presents a different challenge, requiring students to research, troubleshoot, make decisions, test their solutions, and learn from the results. The students are developing practical technical skills while providing a useful service to their school.
Community Partner Involvement: This project currently focuses on providing technology support within Brinkley High School and the district. There is no outside community business partner involved at this time.
Length of Time: The Junior IT project is currently in progress and will continue throughout the school year. Students will continue responding to technology and equipment problems as they arise and will document their repairs and solutions as part of their EAST project.
